While aviation fever swept the U.S. between WWI and WWII, Black enthusiasts strained against racism for their opportunity to soar. A small cadre of innovative and determined Black men and women drew inspiration and courage from Bessie Coleman’s achievements to start a flying club, build their own airfield south of Chicago, and open the first flight school to instruct both Black and white students.
